I just stumbled across the Spring 2013 Lookbook for Marais USA, a women’s shoe brand with offices in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I’m so in love with these photos! I think this campaign is so fun, inventive and youthful.

Their blog is also pretty cool and their Brooklyn offices look neat too.

Alec Soth, New Orleans, from Sleeping by the Mississippi

On American Photomag‘s blog there’s a cool series of posts called “How You Living” that interview established photographers about how they’ve supported themselves during their career. I love hearing about how artists and designers transition from school to work and “fame” in the art world. There’s truly no established path to “make it” in the art/design world, but learning from others is a great way to find your own path. I know I still haven’t found mine but I’m working on it.

Last week I stumbled across the street photography of Vivien Maier, a nanny living in NYC in the 1950′s that lead a prolifically creative life, but also one that was fiercely private. Some regard Maier as the female Cartier-Bresson but all her work was unknown until just a few years ago. In 2007, John Maloof went to an auction near his home and purchased a unlabeled trunk full of negatives for less then $400. Inside the box contained hundreds of negatives and rolls of film belonging to Maier that had never been seen by anyone else. The find of the century! Since then, Maloof has shared her legacy to the world and is even producing a documentary about her life. Can you imagine if these photos had never been found? And what’s even more puzzling is why Maier kept this all a secret? Even those closest to her had no idea about her secret double life as a photographer, possibly regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century. Today I got quite the surprise in my inbox from the folks at Behance. My work for Jonathan Adler is being featured on Typography Served, a site with curated work from leading creatives on Behance. What an honor! Thanks Behance!

Today on tumblr I stumbled across the collage work of Chicago-dweller/designer Emily Haasch. According to her bio, Emily describes herself as the following,

“Emily Haasch is a designer, collage artist, art student, ordinary nerd, tiny person, pixel enthusiast, avid reader, exhaustive writer, Newcastle drinker, friendly dog-petter, obsessive researcher, brand maker, risk taker, True Life watcher, witty storyteller, loves the city of Rockford, hates the city of Rockford, parking lot explorer, amateur jalapeño farmer, conceptual thinker,practical doer, Wal-Mart shopper, and future owner of an Internet timeshare.”

Whew, what a description right? I love these small collages and her Wrestler series, which I’ll share later. Her work is simple, graphic and enjoyable to look at. To celebrate 500+ followers on Pinterest, I wanted to share some colour inspiration from some of my very own pins. I found the quote above and thought it was quite funny. Yellow is such a beautiful colour, how could someone say it’s horrible? You be the judge! And if you don’t follow me yet, follow me on Pinterest!

This weekend, UK-based artist D*Face posted pictures of a recently completed mural in Puerto Rico (pictured above). Much like Shepard Fairey, D*Face’s work first began popping up as “tags” and small-scale pieces on the streets. Today, his work can be seen as large-scale murals on billboards/building walls and in galleries all over the world. While Fairey is known to have a bad rap, D*Face seems to have evaded the controversy and lawsuits that plague Fairey. I began following D*Face once I saw his work plastered on walls in NYC’s Meatpacking district. I love his Lichtenstein-inspired illustration style and the characters that pop up in his work. One fun fact, he designed the album artwork for Christina Aguilera’s 201o release, Bionic. Very graphic and very colorful, just what I like!

Closer is the second book by Scott Schuman of the Sartorialist, the blog that inspired a million clones and turned street style blogging into the industry it is today. I bought his first book, The Sartorialist, when I moved to New York and totally feel in love. So I was trilled to learn Schuman was releasing a sequel. What I enjoy most about Closer is the diversity of images and the way Schuman plays with contrast in the spreads. One spread might show two people dressed head-to-toe in white, but each outfit is still individually unique. Another spread might show two people wearing similar colors, patterns, or type of dress, but each person wears it their own way. These patterns are so thoughtfully arranged and paced which adds to the experience of reading it. There’s also nice contrast between ages in Closer. It’s touching to see pictures of children beside adults and realize that at any age, one can be playful with style.

I’ve posted a sampling of my favorites but I highly recommend that you pick up the book for yourself! All Schuman’s books should be experienced in person as they each give an intimate look into how we dress and express ourselves through clothes. So get into it!
